Dutch Apple Pie (Appeltaart) Recipe: Easy Baking

Dutch Apple Pie (Appeltaart) Recipe: Easy Baking

Nothing says "welcome to a Dutch home" like the scent of a freshly baked Appeltaart wafting through the kitchen. Unlike American apple pie, the Dutch version is famous for its sturdy, buttery crust and a filling packed with cinnamon-spiced apples and raisins. It is a centerpiece of Dutch birthday parties and a beloved treat for any weekend afternoon.

Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Prep: Soak raisins (15 min) and pat dry. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a 24cm springform pan.
  2. Dough: Mix butter, baking mix, and 2/3 of the beaten egg. Knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Apples: Peel and slice apples. Toss with sugar, cinnamon, and raisins.
  4. Base: Line the bottom and sides of the pan with 2/3 of the dough.
  5. Fill: Add apples and press down firmly. Create a lattice pattern on top with the remaining dough.
  6. Bake: Brush with remaining egg. Bake for 50–60 minutes until golden brown. Cool before serving.

Best Enjoyed With...

In the Netherlands, a slice of Appeltaart is incomplete without a generous dollop of slagroom (whipped cream). For the ultimate Dutch experience, serve it alongside a steaming cup of Douwe Egberts coffee or a fragrant Pickwick tea. If you're feeling extra indulgent, warm up the pie slightly before serving.
