Father’s Day in the Netherlands : A Closer Look 🇳🇱

Father’s Day in the Netherlands, known as Vaderdag, falls on the third Sunday of June — just like in Hong Kong and many other places. But the Dutch tend to keep things simple and heartfelt.

The day often begins with breakfast in bed, lovingly prepared by children. This could be a tray with warm coffee, fresh bread rolls, fruit juice — or something homemade like pancakes or cake.

Many kids also make crafts or drawings at school in the lead-up to Father’s Day, which are then proudly gifted on Sunday morning.

Dutch families usually focus on quality time. A relaxed family lunch, a walk in the park, or even just an afternoon together at home are cherished ways to mark the day.

How Father’s Day Is Celebrated Around the World 🌍

Father’s Day isn’t a one-size-fits-all holiday. The ways people celebrate — and what they consider the “perfect gift” — vary across cultures. Here’s a quick look at how different countries put their own spin on Father’s Day:

USA 🇺🇸

Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It’s all about family BBQs, handmade cards, and thoughtful gifts — from high-tech gadgets to personalized mugs. Many families enjoy spending quality time together over a hearty meal or outdoor activity.

Taiwan 🇹🇼

Taiwan celebrates Father’s Day on August 8. The date is pronounced “bā-bā” in Mandarin, which sounds like “爸爸” (dad in Chinese)—a fun linguistic pun. It's an unofficial holiday, but families often go out for dinner, give small gifts, or simply express their gratitude.

Germany 🇩🇪

Celebrated on May 29, Germany’s Father’s Day (Vatertag) coincides with Ascension Day and often turns into a "men’s day out." Groups of dads and friends go hiking, pulling wagons filled with beer, snacks, and loud music. It’s a more humorous and spirited tradition, with less focus on gift-giving.

Thailand 🇹🇭

Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5, the birthday of the late King Bhumibol. People wear yellow, give Canna flowers (symbolizing masculinity), and often perform acts of service or kindness to honour their fathers.

South Korea 🇰🇷

In South Korea, there's no separate Father’s Day. Instead, both parents are honoured on Parents’ Day, celebrated every May 8. Children typically give carnations and heartfelt letters to show love and respect. It’s more sentimental than commercial.

Belgium 🇧🇪

Belgium’s Father’s Day is typically observed on the second Sunday in June, but there’s a twist—in the Antwerp region, it’s celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day), aligning with some Catholic traditions. Belgian dads might receive chocolates, breakfast in bed, or handmade gifts from their children.
